Manufacture of all-wood sawdust-based particle board using ionic liquid-facilitated fusion process

Abstract Traditional particle board can generate harmful indoor air emissions due to the volatile resin-based compounds present. This study investigated preparation of sawdust using novel ionic liquid based fusion approach with [EMIM]OAc. The dissolution parameters were thermal optical microscopy technique. sheets prepared by hot pressing in presence (IL) ([EMIM]OAc) and subsequently purifying matrix from IL methanol. process particles was analysed SEM mechanical testing. raw materials produced elemental analysis, FTIR, 13 C-SS-NMR. required a temperature above 150 °C, similar glass transition (t g ) lignin. At lower temperatures, strong not obtained. It observed that sawdust/IL weight ratio an important parameter process, 1:3 resulted strongest boards tensile strength up 10 MPa, commercial boards. also studied twin-screw extruder. extrusion enhanced increasing particles, which seen elevated (20 MPa). provides practical view how sawdust-based be manufactured liquid-based fusion.
